We’re thrilled to share that we’ve been selected for Next Generation Internet Search, a European project to support “entrepreneurs, tech-geeks, developers, and socially engaged people” to challenge the way we search and discover information and resources on the internet.

Our Portugal-based curator Matt Stempeck (hi) has teamed up with Eticas.ai, a Spanish company that’s productizing the ability to measure performance of protective attributes within data-driven decision-making systems.

Together, we’ll test civic and democratic AI models to ensure that their algorithmic outcomes and impacts do not further discriminate or erase individuals and groups. This work could make AI safer to use by those who are already impacted by historical dynamics of discrimination, as well as other outliers that may emerge in specific systems.

Are you applying data-driven decision-making systems in public, civic, political, and/or democratic contexts?

Might you be interested in being able to prove that your model produces equitable outcomes, not just in simulated lab environments, but out in the real world?

Share a link to your project (or someone else’s project that you suggest we check out) and we’ll be in touch:

By working together, we can begin evaluating the impacts of public-focused decision-making systems based on actual benchmark data rather than hypothetical lab simulations. NGI’s support will help us launch and open source these tools and data for others to make use of, too.

Since 2016, we’ve hand-categorized over 330 discrete examples of civic and democratic AI in the Civic Tech Field Guide. We’re always on the lookout for more, especially given the slew of recent launches in the past year. Please share what you see so we can help the whole field learn from each other.
