Outline VPN offered in Zimbabwe

CITE in Zimbabwe and Code for Africa have partnered to make Outline from Jigsaw available to news organisations and CSOs. It means VPN can be rolled out on their own servers to connect to the internet and keep communication private and safe.

by g0v news: Code for Africa and Zimbabwe's Centre for Innovation and Technology (CITE) have partnered to provide tools and training to media and civic organizations to enable VPN use during internet blackouts and share skills on ensuring privacy and safety online. When governments shut down internet access, like they did in January in Zimbabwe, it is paralyzing to media and civic organizations which rely on connectivity to operate. Code for Africa and CITE have made Outline from Jigsaw to enable VPNs from organizations' own servers and training on how to use VPNs. They are also providing in-house training on internet safety including how to protect their identity. The initiative aims to reach 600 journalists and civic organizations in Zimbabwe to provide risk and threat assessments and run tailored training programs in the hope of empowering them to remain operational even through internet blackouts.
