"Launched in 2012, the program is supposed to be a system for civil society groups to provide local context that can improve platform policies — think of it as Meta’s private brain trust, and a hedge against the company’s ongoing operational issues in countries it seems to often misunderstand. In theory, the Trusted Partner program lets local civil society groups ring the alarm bells about political conflicts on the platform (as they’d done in Myanmar and Sri Lanka and half a dozen other cases). It would give moderators a way to escalate concerns quickly, and give the company an easy way to tell which reports are credible. The problem, according to the half-dozen Trusted Partners who attended the meeting, is that Meta was slow and inconsistent in how it handled their reports too.
