Freedom of expression in the Middle East and North Africa is under severe pressure, with governments cracking down on those who express dissenting views. Yet, human rights defenders and activists across the region continue to bravely stand up for people’s rights and fundamental freedoms, despite facing digital threats such as harassment, violence, defamation , phishing attacks and spyware that put their lives at risk. Targeted groups include journalists, online commentators, and human rights defenders advocating for the rights of women, LGBTI people and marginalized communities. These rights are protected under international human rights law.
