Today, the City of Toronto is launching Building Permit Application Pre-Check, an online self-check tool that uses AI to help applicants identify potential issues in eligible building permit applications before submitting them to the City.
Applicants can upload their application documents to the tool and receive real-time feedback on missing, incomplete or inconsistent information and certain zoning or Ontario Building Code-related issues within the pilot's scope. The tool generates a findings report that applicants can use to address or explain flagged items before formally submitting their applications for a full review by City staff. The pilot will run for one year and is currently available for specific projects involving residential buildings with two units or fewer, including additions, alterations, laneway and garden suites, decks, porches and detached garages in eligible residential zones. The pilot aligns with the City's Digital Infrastructure Strategic Framework and reflects Toronto's commitment to using artificial intelligence responsibly and transparently to improve public services.
